Mother Nature Takes a Break CHAPTER FOUR The last fight between the two had caused a severe drought throughout the south, affecting Australia and the surrounding regions for seven years, so far. Nino had refused to move north, causing Nina to stay there for far too long. Hurricanes, blizzards, cyclones and tornados had been the result. The elements in the area, also not being able to move about freely had lost their collective tempers and unleashed severe conditions which caused major damage all over the world. It was a long first day. Cyan and Clime had talked late into the night. Cyan outlining his plan for the board. He explained to Clime that he, Cyan, hadn’t been trying to undermine Clime, whilst employed in weather; he had just wanted to explain his ideas to the older man. Clime wanted to know more about the proposal for the Board of Meteorology. Who would serve? Who would have ultimate authority? Whose butt would be kicked when things went wrong? Cyan made notes concerning the twins and their terms of employment. New contracts would have to be written. Before taking his leave, Cyan had asked Clime for a list of all the weather departments and the names of the department heads; divisions and sub divisions included. He needed an idea of how many people were in the organisation. Who were the most important? Which weather conditions were not maintaining their divisions? Next on the list were the elements: Eus, a female God, had inherited her position in storm from her husband before his death. With no heir apparent, and not wanting to push Eus into unwanted retirement, Mother Nature had allowed this break in the rules. All of this information landed on his desk only a short time ago. Unfortunately Eus was often unavailable to her department heads. Her employee file stated that she was a soft-hearted mother type who treated her various division leaders as her own children, and subsequently ‘spread herself to thin’, trying to deal with every little detail of their lives. She was forever running over the globe trying to sort out various weather intrigues and trying, unsuccessfully to get everyone to work together. Eus, it was noted, hated Nina and Nino. Her employment identification photo showed a tall woman of athletic build. Her face was lined and her brown hair starting to grey. She was smiling in the photo, a warm smile that reached her eyes. To Cyan she looked like somebody’s mother, just as her profile had said. Who would he need on the board? Clime definitely, his knowledge was imperative; to make up for what Cyan didn’t know. Although confident in his knowledge, Cyan wasn't above using someone with greater insight. It was essential he meet with these other people to see if they were the right stuff for his overhaul. Cyan’s head was spinning. Maybe he had bitten off more than he could chew. Mother Nature had told him that weather was the most complex of all her responsibilities. She also said it was the most convoluted and archaic category of Naturalis. Cyan understood why she was having a hard time controlling all the major factions and why it was “hard to fix”. Cyan made a note to meet with Eus and make his own evaluation. “Determination is my middle name,” Cyan laughed to himself as he got started on the employee files. Within the storm department there were the divisions. Cyan looked at each file. First on the list were, of course, Nina and Nino. Their job description was vague; something to do with controlling atmospheric conditions over the oceans. Lightning - Division Head - Wehttam. Job description: - Lightening is the accumulation of static electricity produced when liquid and ice particles collide. An electrical field (static electricity) builds up. The lightning element gathers and distributes this static as lightning. Nina’s position stated that it was her duty to lower sea temperatures over the surface of the ocean, thus producing cool, moist conditions on land in the southern hemisphere and the reverse in the north. She controlled an effect called La Nina, hence her name. Personnel Officers notes - Wehttam is a powerful man of over 6’, with fiery red hair and a temper to match. A native to Naturalis, he took over this position when his father was killed in an electrical explosion, caused during a storm in the middle of a hurricane. Lightning had bounced off a wave and hit him directly. Wehttam was still in training at the time of the tragedy and took over his responsibilities at a very young age. Her term of employment each year was for 5 months in each hemisphere. What did she do for the other two months? Nino had the reverse effect to Nina. He controlled El Nino which caused the sea temperature to rise, causing warmer, drier conditions on land in the south and again the reverse in the north. His annual employment term was not mentioned. There was also no specific dates or seasons stated in either contract. The lack of times and dates was causing rivalry between the twins. She demanding her 5 months of employment in each hemisphere and he overstepping her at every opportunity. He allows his moods to dictate how many and how powerful he allows his workers to make lightning. He can also produce lightning extraneously when he chooses, by saving static internally. This process is against the rules, 33
