Read Across the Universe
Each year schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia, celebrating its 68th birthday in 2013. The annual festival is held by the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA). Book week began in 1945, and since 1987 Guides have created posters to illustrate the themes and promote events. This year Hay Guides decorated the Hay library with various forms of transports as well as a huge world globe. The girls are pictured with their favourite short listed books for this year.
Finding a sunny spot to read their books at the Hay Library is easy after school. Four children spotted at the Library are all smiles because they are going to enjoy a good book.
Hay Public School celebrated book week with students and teachers dressing up as their favourite book characters. Kate Simpson, Holly Headon, Grace Nisbett and Erins Shalders are pictured with a selection of the 2013 short listed books.
