On the Road to Alma
Paul Gaudet
Greetings everyone, welcome to summer. Let’ s take a journey down a road( s) that I particularly enjoy at anytime of the year but is particularly special( autumn notwithstanding) in the summer months.
There are many pleasant scenic drives to be had in Southeastern N. B., but in this issue, I want to explore the wonders along routes 114 and 915 to Alma.
From Moncton & Riverview, route 114 starts when you cross Gunningsville Bridge and turn left towards Hillsborough. Once in the village, you will find two museums( Railway and Steeves) and a wonderful little café called the Cinnamon Soul where Heather, Brittany and Joe will serve up all kinds of delights, most of which are sourced locally and prepared lovingly. Their own farm fresh chicken and bacon, homemade breads and preserves, great soups, salads
panini sandwiches and, new this summer, lobster rolls served on Heather’ s homemade rolls... And another thing, they make the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted.
Moving along to Hopewell Cape where you will find the Albert County Museum and discover“ The People of the Tides” plus a wealth of information on Canadian Prime Minister R. B. Bennett who
Cinnamon Soul
Cafe & Bakery was born nearby in Hopewell Hill. He was our 11th Canadian Prime Minister and the only one born in new Brunswick.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the most famous place in
Hopewell Cape which of course is the Hopewell Rocks Ocean Tidal Exploration Site. It is one of the prime tourist destinations in our province and was visited by 304,000 guests in 2017. The tidal magic that occurs there and the sculpted rock formations that have transpired as a result, have amazed and delighted people for at least a century and a half.
When cruising over the hill past the Rocks, the monolithic Shepody Mountain comes in to view and from there on, the scenic vistas come fast and furious. You will soon come to Broadleaf Guest Ranch which will provide you with a good meal and accommodations, be it cabins, lodge or camping, along with horse back riding.
In the village of Riverside-Albert you will come to the junction of route 915 which will take you to the vast marshland and up in to the tiny hamlet of Harvey.
Mary’ s Point bird sanctuary is next where the Canadian Wildlife Service operates an interpretive
