The Magnificent Fundy Trail Parkway
Le magnifique parc du sentier Fundy
Paul Gaudet Greetings and welcome to the annual rebirth of autumn. It is going to be great to experience the cool nights and crisp days after the hot and humid summer we have enjoyed or for some, endured.
One of our province’ s finest assets in terms of spectacular, natural beauty is the Fundy Trail which starts just outside St. Martins and winds its way along the Fundy coast for 30 Kilometres. It consists of a purpose-built parkway that encompasses many spectacular seascape outlooks that rival any in the world.

The Magnificent Fundy Trail Parkway

There are 19 trails which make up a distance of 35 kms. You can hike and walk on all of them and bike on many of them and that does not include the famous wilderness trail known as the Fundy Footpath. I have had the pleasure to hike on virtually all of these trails and they are all impressive in one way or another.
Hiking or biking not for you? You
can simply drive from one lookout to another. There are ample parking spaces along the entire route in order to appreciate the mindblowing sights below. The cliffs seem to fold into one another as you drive along the coast. Some of my favourite lookouts are the Big Salmon River Lookout, the Hairpin Turn Lookout and the Melvin Beach Lookout. There are also several waterfalls such as: Fuller Falls( one of the best) along with McLeod Brook Falls( be prepared for a long descent by rope block steps) and Long Beach Brook Falls.
Are there other things to do? Of course, you can visit the Cookhouse Heritage Mill, the interpretive centre, the Sea Captain’ s Burial Ground or just picnic at the Green Picnic Area or the fine facilities at Long Beach.
Keep in mind that the park has extended their hours of operation until October 20th this year, recognizing that more and more guests are travelling in the autumn season.
Noteworthy is that the connecting road( phase 3) from the Parkway to Sussex Corner will be finished in the fall of 2019 and open for travel in the spring of 2020. The connector road to Fundy National Park( phase 4) will be finished in the fall of 2020 and open to the public in the spring of 2021. When these connectors are finished it will enable the Parkway to achieve its full potential.
If you are looking for something to do this fall then do yourself a favour and head out to visit the Fundy Trail Parkway, I promise that you will find its beauty nothing short of breathtaking.
