GOAL 3 :
RE-ORGANIZE PRIMA
In 2020 , our PRIMA magazine published three digital issues , including 26 articles spanning 40 pages of content written by over 21 authors . A special thanks to all our authors : Rachel Ash , John Bracey , Chris Buczek , Andrew Carroll , Cheryl Cheatham , Nava Cohen , Megan Degraff , Traci Dougherty , Catherine
Hayward ,
Brandtly Jones , Stephanie Krause , Krystal Kubichek , Emily Lewis , Kendal Ogles , Micheal Posey , Brad Savage , Donna Seidman , Abigail Simone , Kristin Slonsky , Andrea Stehle , and Rose Williams . Micheal Posey wrote the most articles , composing five pieces himself . Out of the three publications , our most-read issue was Summer 2020 . Within that issue , our most popular article was “ Nava Cohen helms the Exploratory Latin Exam ” with 291 unique page views .
GOAL 4 :
SET SOCIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVES
A global movement for racial justice took hold in 2020 . To show our support , Excellence Through Classics committed to ensuring equity , eliminating discrimination , and diversifying the perspective of our materials . Eleven ETC committee members attended three diversity training sessions to better develop our equity lens and understand shortcomings . Toward these measures , ETC sent nine documents to the Diversity , Equity and Inclusivity Committee for review , expanded five resources ( activities , stories and syllabi ) to include a broader perspective , and included seven pieces in PRIMA with content and authors representative of lesserheard voices . We also created the ETC Access Fund to ensure equitable access to all of our contests , resources , and exams .
PRIMA had a year of growth , doubling the content offered within its pages in each publication . Further , we added 109 new readers who read 2,153 online pages in 201 reading sessions . PRIMA readers were spread across three continents , six countries ( United States , Canada , United Kingdom , Germany , Italy , and Spain ) and 125 cities . If that wasn ’ t enough for one year , PRIMA closed out 2020 by moving its production to a new digital platform , Joomag , undergoing a full redesign , and onboarding a new co-editor .
In 2020 , we also brought both Medusa and Pegasus into the ETC family and started working together to make those contests accessible to elementary , middle school , and high students and teachers .
The ETC culture continues to be personal , productive , and positive . Looking back , there were so many bright spots in 2020 . Yes , teachers and students found new ways to connect to each other and teach / learn . Still , people from around the world came together to help support each other in new ways during the pandemic .
Traci Dougherty ( tdougher @ udsd . org ) is proud to teach middle school Latin ( 6th-8th grade ) at Sandy Run Middle School . She runs the Latin Club and is co-sponsor of her PAJCL chapter .
