What are the most surprising things
( about you , your students , your work ) you have learned from your publishing ? When I first published my teaching materials , I worried that they would not be as successful in other teachers ’ classrooms . Fortunately , teachers did find the same success as I did . I attribute this to my students ! Everything I have published has been classroom-tested , and I refuse to publish anything that does not resonate with my own students . They are the ultimate judges of whether an assignment does or doesn ’ t work . There have been plenty of materials that I have sent back to the drawing board to be re-worked until they receive a more favorable classroom reaction .
Any strange mythology factoid ( s ) that you ’ d like to share with our readers ? To my knowledge , no one has ever given a good explanation for what nectar and ambrosia taste like . I ’ m guessing Coca- Cola and Doritos !
I feel my best when … A former student lists my Mythology class as their favorite class in high school .
Any future projects or ideas that you would like to share with readers ? I have been teaching for fifteen years , and in that time I have created eight textbooks for teaching Greco-Roman mythology , Norse mythology , and the legends of King Arthur through the use of Reader ’ s Theater script-stories . These script-like adaptations of the stories allow my students to inhabit the characters and experience the myths in a whole new way , but I ’ ve never had a chance to branch out into other world cultures . So my current project is writing a book that incorporates twelve hero stories from a variety of cultures around the world .
Cool fun fact One of the craziest moments of my life : When James Holzhauer , Jeopardy ! Champion said that he used my textbooks to gain his knowledge of
mythology !
