Poem Patrick Yaggy Quaedam Prex
Lorenzo Levy is a rising senior at BASIS Tucson North and recently completed AP Latin . Composing Latin has been one of Lorenzo ' s passions since fifth grade . In more recent years , he has taken up the endlessly fulfilling pastime of composing Latin poetry .
About the piece : This poem is a hypothetical prayer to Neptune , begging for mercy from his earthquakes which have already destroyed most of the Wonders of the Ancient World . The poem begins with praise of Neptune ' s divinity , then describes some of the wondrous monuments turned to ruins by earthquakes . In the final lines of the poem , the speaker begins to contemplate the nature of wondrous physical objects in the world and their impermanence , but then he cuts himself off and begs Neptune to refrain from destroying more monuments . The poem mostly employs the major metrical conventions and vocabulary of Golden Age dactylic hexameter poetry , especially of Vergil and Ovid .
