National Mythology Exams Update
Cheryl Cheatham
This year proved to be yet another banner year for the National Mythology Exam, which concluded its 2020 administration with over 7,000 students participating and more than 400 schools nationally and internationally offering this test to enthusiasts and students of classical mythology from grades 3-12. The National Mythology Exam is administered by Excellence Through Classics, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019 and is a standing committee of the American Classical League. The National Mythology Exam is ETC’s largest undertaking.
Looking forward to 2021, we have split the National Mythology Exam into two parts. The Pegasus Mythology Exam will continue to serve third through eighth grade students. High school students will take the Medusa Mythology Exam. The overall theme for both exams is Transformations.
Pegasus will highlight the theme by focusing on the tales of Eos and Tithonus, Helios and Phaethon, and Echo and Narcissus. Classical sub-tests for grades 7 and 8 will include questions from either Aeneid Book I or Odyssey Book 23.
Medusa will highlight the theme by focusing on monstrous transformations. Some myths included are Medusa, Scylla,
Charybdis, Pegasus, Python, Alecto, and
more. All students in grades nine through twelve will have the same questions.
A complete test bibliography along with registration
materials will be available on the NME website. Additionally, ETC has available for purchase an updated activity packet with printable activities designed to reinforce the concepts and information covered by the Pegasus Mythology Exam.
Registration for the National Mythology Exams opens on September 1, 2020 and will remain open until January 15, 2021. Administration dates for the exams are February 22 through March 5, 2021. Results will be mailed in mid-to-late May 2021.
