Petrino Awards
Congratulations to Luca Stocco, one of this year’s ETC Petrino Award recipients. Here, Luca tells us more about his love for Greek, Latin, and mythology...
My name is Luca Stocco and I am 13. I am the fourth child of a large family, consisting of nine children. I have been studying Latin for four years and just began studying Greek this past year, and I enjoy studying both languages.
I like studying the Classics because I like learning new things and like the challenge. My Greek teacher Mrs. Beer nominated me for the Petrino award.
I would say that there are many times when studying the classics can get frustrating and hard, but if you keep on with it, you'll find out that it definitely was worth it, so never give up!
Someday I would like to become a farmer. The study of Latin and Greek has helped me with other studies, which in turn will help me better understand farming.
I like the adventurous stories in mythology, and I also think it is very interesting. I do not have a specifically favorite myth, but one of my favorites is the story of Jason and Medea, which I read in Latin this past year.
I have a lot of favorite books, but the best are probably the books in the Sword and Serpent series, written by Taylor R. Marshall. At this moment, I like the movie “True Grit”, a western which stars John Wayne (I also like a lot of other western movies).
