ETC honors Lauri Dabbieri for years of service teaching and inspiring young Classicists
“I am passionate about service-learning and helping students see how giving of their time and resources really can change the world.”
Laurie Dabbieri
Excellence Through Classics would like to congratulate Lauri Dabbieri, our 2020 Calliope Award recipient! The Calliope Award is awarded biennially by the ETC Executive Committee in recognition of an individual's impact on Elementary and/or Middle School Classics.
Lauri is a 1993 graduate of Sweet Briar College. She majored in Latin with an Art History minor. She envisioned a career in museums but quickly decided to pursue teaching after teaching French and Introduction to Foreign Languages part-time in Goochland, VA.
Lauri obtained her license to teach in public school in 1995 and taught in Chesterfield County, Alexandria City, and Fairfax County in Virginia between 1993-2015. She obtained a Masters of Arts in New Professional Studies (Education) from George Mason University in 1999 and a Masters of Arts in Classics (Latin) from the University of Maryland in 2014. She also took a three-year sabbatical to study linguistics in Italy at the Universita per Stranieri di Siena.
In 2015, Lauri accepted a position as a middle and upper school Latin teacher at Sidwell Friends School. She is one of the faculty advisors for the upper school’s Kid Power tutoring program, which pairs Sidwell Friends’ students with DC Public School second graders to work on literacy skills.
Lauri was Julia Petrino's Latin teacher. She nurtured Julia’s love of Latin and Greco-Roman civilizations, even tutoring Julia at home three times a week for two years to enable her to keep on pace with her classmates. Following the tragic death of Julia in 1999, Lauri, together with Julia's friends and family, established the Julia K. Petrino Award, administered by the ETC. The Petrino Award has continued to encourage and nurture young classicists by recognizing their achievements and passion since 2000. This unique award for budding classics scholars would not exist without Lauri’s enthusiasm and passion for teaching, the inspiration she provided (and still provides) her students, and the love she still holds for an incredible young lady who passed well before her time. love of Latin and Greco-Roman civilizations, even tutoring Julia at home three times a week for two years to enable her to keep on pace with her classmates.
