Signs & Symptoms of a Negative Body Image
Symptoms of a negative and unhealthy body image includes: being self-obsessive in front of the mirror. By this it means that you are constantly looking in the mirror and looking for the negatives within your body rather than the positives. Another symptom can include comparison with other people’s body, shape and size. By this you are constantly discharging people’s comments and are being influenced by their body and you want to look like how they do which is highly unrealistic. This may make you envy the person’s body a lot. With these signs happening it lowers your self-esteem and makes you feel very uncomfortable in your own skin.
Causes of Negative Body Image
Sometimes your body image could be negatively impacted by your thoughts and significant events. For example, a dancer who is constantly being judged by other people in her dance group to lose weight and to become for thinner and flexible with her body. These comments develop an ingrained or long standing dissatisfaction with her body no matter how thin she is because she will constantly be asked to lose more.
If you are concerned about your body image, then ask yourself these two questions:
-Do I find myself regularly criticising my own appearance?
Or
-Is my head space of beauty distorted from years of media exposure which is glorifying a thin ideal and unrealistic image to obtain a manner?
