Guildford Grammar Preparatory School Writing Festival 2019 Narratives Student writing sample: Lies by Isabella McAtee 26/2/2003 Tuesday 12/7/2010 Monday My Dad lives on a farm with me. He works really hard. I love him, he loves me. But he lies. To me and for me. He lies that he has money, he lies about being happy, he lies that he’s not hungry and he lies that he’s not tired. I know so I help him. I help him clean the house, I help him make dinner. I help him on the farm, I feed his horse. Today I saw him resting on some hay. I went out to lie with him because I thought he was sleeping. I saw two men run off the farm with a gun. I stayed with him. Even though he was gone. Tonight, I’m going out with my girlfriend, Tamika, we’re celebrating her birthday, even though it’s in a week, she’s visiting her family then. I wish we could go other places but we must stay near the hospital, in case anything goes wrong, you know how she has trouble with her sight, it’s getting worse. She might go blind soon, very soon. I’m getting a guide dog for her birthday, she loves Labradors, the Lab’s name is Genesis. She’s currently 11 months old, still a young puppy! 7 years of depression and suffering went by 3/7/2010 Saturday “Hey Dad, I miss you! It’s my 14th birthday today. I hope you’re proud. I’m in year 8 now. I got a dog today. I still love you Dad! I’m living with Grandma, but she’s in hospital, she had trouble breathing last night. So, her neighbour, Leigh is looking after me. I know Grandma will be okay. Tomorrow I have a job interview at a pet store. My friend ditched me, she said I’m always so depressed, but don’t worry Dad, it’s not your fault, I could have saved you remember. It’s my fault Dad!” 16/7/2010 Friday Today I got a call from the hospital, Grandma passed away. Her heartbeat slowed down a lot at around 3 in the morning and she left. I’ve moved in with Leigh, she’s basically my own mum, the one I wish I had when I needed her. But on the bright side, it’s Tamika’s actual birthday in a few days! I can’t wait for her to meet Genesis. She’s a really good dog! 30 17/7/2010 Saturday Today I got another call from the hospital, it’s Tamika, she’s gone fully blind, looks like she’s getting an early birthday present! I hope she likes Genesis! I’ll update when I give Genesis to her. UPDATE: She loves Genesis, but she’s really upset about losing 98.6% of her vision, she said she can only see bright colours like red, green and purple, and light. But no other colours or shapes or anything else really.
