NEA BIG READ PROGRAM
The Town of Garner ’ s Parks , Recreation & Cultural Resources Department , in partnership with the Southeast Regional Library , is one of 62 organizations nationwide selected to receive a 2023-2024 National Endowment for the Arts ( NEA ) Big Read . The $ 9,300 grant will support a community reading program focusing on Can ’ t We Talk About Something More Pleasant ? by Roz Chast . Spanning the last several years of their lives and told through four-color cartoons , family photos and documents , and a narrative as rife with laughs as it is with tears , Chast ’ s memoir offers both comfort and comic relief for anyone experiencing the life-altering loss of elderly parents .
Grant-funded programming will include book discussions , lectures , wellness classes , masterclasses , and arts workshops . Events will run September through June at the Southeast Regional Library , Garner Performing Arts Center ( GPAC ), Garner Senior Center ( GSC ), and partnering local businesses .
The NEA Big Read — a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest — broadens our understanding of our world , our neighbors , and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience .
