Minimize Soil Erosion
Soil erosion is a natural process . Some soil sediment is needed to bring nutrients and substrate materials to aquatic ecosystems , but too much sediment causes problems . Common causes of streambank failure include over-watering lawns , removal of vegetation , and on-site or upstream alteration of the creek channel .
You can minimize erosion by :
Protecting care soil surfaces . Planting native vegetation is the best means to stabilize soil since plants are adapted to local conditions .
Disturbing existing vegetation as little as possible , their roots hold soil in place .
Diverting roof runoff to open landscaped areas ( away from the creek ).
Limiting human activity in vulnerable areas of creeks , streambanks , and unsurfaced roads .
Contact City Staff if you are experiencing an erosion issue . Refer to the GETTING HELP page at the end of this handbook .
