Jason and Tynisa Collins are truly the epitome of a PowerCouple . The couple owns the Jason Collins School of Cosmetology , Barber , Nursing and CDL in Georgetown , South Carolina . Jason ’ s expertise and resume is extensive . He volunteers at the Center of Domestic Violence and Department of Juvenile Justice . To add to his affiliations , Jason is a SC Notary , fire fighter , provides service on Hospital Foundation Board , serves as Board Chair Advisory Committee as well as owner of several businesses such as Jason Collins Entertainment and Jason Collins Security Services . The doting couple also hosts several events at their facility throughout the year including a Christmas Toy drive that supports several kids at Christmas and food drives that supports underserved families . This year , Jason announced that he will run for Mayor of Georgetown . I had an opportunity to speak with him about his mayoral candidacy at his barber school .
Shanna : Jason , I am sorry that Tynisa isn ’ t here to interview with us . But I know she is a doting
mom and working on several behind the scene logistics for you . So I will ask you , why do you want to run for Mayor ?
Jason : Do you have a few hours for me to tell you all the reasons ?
Shanna : ( laughing ) No . Just summarize for me .
Jason : I want to do something to help . I made a promise to God that if I got back on my feet and
got back to my hometown Georgetown ; I will make a difference . A few years back , there was an incident with city personnel and I . I felt I was treated unfairly and unjustly . Immediately after that I moved to Atlanta . There , I was down on my luck . I was homeless . No one at home knew of my situation . I slept in cars , airports and had to sleep in shelters . My wife stuck by me the entire time . It was at that moment , I made my promise to God that if He helped me out of that situation , I would help others that were experiencing the same things I had experienced . I got back on my feet . I gained employment and worked several jobs for days straight to recover from my situation . There were times when my family had to resort to getting food from food banks and during Christmases we depended on toy drives to ensure our children had toys for Christmas . Being in that situation compelled me more to do for others when my circumstances improved . During that time I had time to think about my hometown and all the injustices that happened against me and decided “ No more ”. No more will I allow someone else to do something and I stand back and I wait . I was determined to come back to Georgetown and stop the cycle of injustices . It seemed that sometimes , these unfortunate circumstances repeated itself . It had to stop . The stop will start with me .
Shanna : Oh no , Jason !!! I ’ m so sorry to hear that . I had no idea that you had to experience that
hardship .
