Glenda:( recovering from her laughter) I was like 16 then with those Levi ' s lol.( fanning her
hands away) We were young.( laughing again at the Levi ' s comment). Ever since I met Terry, I knew I wanted him to be my husband.
Terry: I graduated in 1980 and then moved Baltimore to
work. I left Dunbar to go find more opportunities. In Baltimore, I found a job at Sears Cleaning Service. Glenda was still in Dunbar. I left for Baltimore in June of 1980 and was gone until Christmas. I would visit for the holidays. When I came home and saw Glenda, Man, I was like,‘ I ' m staying here. I am not going back to Baltimore’. I never went back. I stayed in Dunbar to be near Glenda.
Shanna: Glenda, what were your thoughts and feelings
about Terry moving to Baltimore?
Glenda: Well, I was still in high school. I was like ' Dag man,
my homie ain ' t here no more’. I really missed him. We wrote letters but we couldn ' t call each other. Back then we didn ' t have cell phone and we wasn ' t going to run up a phone bill calling each other long distance. When I graduated, I had a basketball scholarship to go to college. I scored over 1000 points in my four years of high school. Terry was very supportive. Then I left to attend college, Terry would come to visit me every weekend. During the Thanksgiving break of my freshman year, I came home and saw Terry, and never went back. I wanted to stay in Dunbar with Terry. We were inseparable.
Shanna: That is such a sweet story of your love. When it was time to propose, who proposed
to whom?
Terry: She proposed to me.( pointing his thumb to his chest and smiling)
Glenda: Yes. I proposed to him. It was a leap year. Back in those days it was a myth that
women were supposed to propose to the men during a leap year.
Terry: I bought the engagement ring. I was
going to propose to her but my mother said that it was a leap year and the women were supposed to propose. So, I walked into Glenda ' s house, her cousin was doing her hair in the kitchen, and I stood up tall and said ' Ain ' t you ' posed to ask me something? This is your year.' So Glenda came over and popped the big question.
Glenda: Yes, I was in the kitchen getting done
up!( laughing) I got down on one knee and I started to ask him, but I kept laughing. I would start to ask, but had to stop. I did this for a few times, start and stop and laugh. Start and Stop and laugh. Then finally I asked him,‘ Would you marry me’?
