Female Circumcision (N) - The action or traditional practice of cutting off the clitoris and sometimes the labia of girls and young women (Dictionary). The common age for marriage is 17 (A Elrukar). The Ethiopian women believed in large families and having children early. Only 6% of Ethiopian women use a skilled attendant during delivery and only 10% deliver in a professional institution (Irin News). This means most are having children in poor living conditions. The women are putting themselves at risk for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other blood-borne diseases. They also face a high maternal mortality rate. Ethiopia has one of the highest maternal mortality rate (Irin News). 350 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (Irin News). The mother isn’t the only one put in danger but also the unborn ch ild. There are plenty solutions that have started since the early 2000’s (Pathfinder International). One solution was started to help get the economy thriving through the farmers. A program called Techno Serve in 2009, started to help the farmers with their coffee crop. The program established 90 new farmer owned wet mills across Ethiopia to kick off the coffee movement (Techno Serve). The wet mills gave farmers consistency, and high quality coffee while earning a generous profit. The Techno Serve continues to help by providing training to over 50,000 coffee farmers in Ethiopia (Techno Serve).
