Reminiscing with Gail & Rodney
When I think of my favorite memory of Christmases I am reminded of the annual Smith family Christmas tree hunt . We never went and “ bought ” a tree …. We went to the woods and found , usually , the most “ Charlie Brown ” Christmas tree there ever was . Daddy and Momma loved Christmas and going to look for the “ perfect ” tree was soooo exciting . These were trips i still treasure . Another memory as a child was going to the shooting matches with my Daddy and Grandpa Smith …. grandpa was a sharp shooter and we always came home with something .
Our Smith Family tradition is Christmas morning breakfast at Mom and Dad ’ s house . We always had a full-blown breakfast and deer tenderloin was the “ stand-out ”.
Rodney ’ s family has always gotten together for Christmas Day lunch with tons of food and everyone there . This year will be the first time someone will be missing in all of Rodney ’ s 65 years . Empty chairs at Christmas are hard for all .
Each year Rodney sits down to watch The Christmas Story , a favorite movie for many people . “ Ralphie , you are going to shoot your eye out !” always brings a chuckle and I love to see him enjoy it .
Rodney tells a story about when his dad , JS got him and his brother Denver bicycles for Christmas . A bicycle was a big gift back in the day .
Both our families were “ simple ” on Christmas decorations . Our parents all worked and just to get a tree up and a few presents under the tree was a great accomplishment . Rodney and I both have been so blessed throughout the years .
