Colombia is the second most populous country in South America and Bogotá, the national capital, is the Colombian city with the largest population. The population is around 50.3 million inhabitants and has a gross domestic product (GDP) of 323.7 billion USD, making this country the fifth economy in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico.
Colombia has a great diversity of natural and energy resources and its main economic activity is the export and exploitation of oil, followed by natural gas, coal and hydroelectric energy, as well as gold reserves, emeralds, iron ore, nickel, copper and agricultural production.
According to data from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Colombia had a GDP increase of 3.3% in 2019, after a period of economic crisis. However, in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent drop in hydrocarbon prices and demand, the economy is expected to contract by -2.7%, according to the EIU, and by -2.4% according to the IMF.
As is the case all over the world, the entire economic activity of the country is affected by the current situation, particularly the energy sector, industry, transport, tourism, culture and trade (except in food products).
