Paris is known as the City of Light , but it could easily be called the City of Enlightenment for its recognition of the contributions of various philosophers , artists , playwrights , and other intellectual figures . Many cities have statues that honor soldiers and statesmen , but few have the many monuments seen in Paris that honor the life of the mind , not conquest nor military achievement . In this photo essay are several examples of the recognition seen in Paris to the many creators whose work has enriched both France and the world .
