Senior Center Receives Federal Funds
U . S . Rep . Deborah Ross announced in December that she had secured over $ 500,000 in federal funding for the Garner Senior Center to make significant improvements and updates to the popular facility . As a result of the assistance that was included in the FY23 budget , the center will get security , HVAC and accessibility upgrades as well as renovations to the facility ’ s kitchen and restrooms . The center has over 42,000 annual visits and hosts Meals on Wheels of Wake County ’ s largest congregate meals program . The estimated completion timeframe for the construction work is Fall 2024 .
Grant to Help Fund Inclusive Playground
The Garner Parks , Recreation and Cultural Resources Department announced in March that it had been awarded a $ 323,520 matching grant from the N . C . Parks and Recreation Trust Fund for an inclusive playground at the Garner Recreation Center . The proposed playground will offer play opportunities for people of any ability and age . Recreational amenities will include an inclusive playground area , an adaptive adult fitness circuit and an adaptive climbing wall . The Town is required to contribute $ 80,000 toward the playground project as matching funds for the grant .
Work on New Fire Station Underway
Wake County and the Town of Garner in November held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Caddy Road Public Safety Building planned for a fast-growing part of Garner ( the U . S . 401-Ten Ten area ). The 16,000-square-foot station , a partnership between the county and the Town , will primarily house Garner Fire-Rescue and Wake County EMS , but it will also offer touch-down space for the Garner Police Department . The facility should be completed in 2024 . The project was made possible in part by $ 6.5 million in Public Safety and Services Facilities Bonds approved by Garner voters in November 2021 .
