MEET AN AUTHOR

We sat down with the chirpy Knicky Abbott and discussed her novel Nescada: Kinder of Flames

Pop Boom Entertainment: What is the full title of your book?

Knicky Abbott: The full title of my first book is Nescada: Kindler of Flames. It is Book 1 in the novel series simply entitled: Nescada.

What is the genre of your book?

The series is a space opera, liberally infused with high fantasy elements.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

My intended audience is the Young

and New Adult demographics; but

anyone, any age, who is interested

in embarking on mythical voyages

and magickal quests, new friendships

and first love, should read my work. It explores themes of estrangement and prejudice, metamorphosis and triumph,

where ruin coalesces with ecstasy, re-experienced through a cast of incongruous and compelling characters.

It is inspired by the landscapes, languages and cultures of the Caribbean, by folklore,

spirituality and mythos. It is dream and fantasy, a pie in the sky with your every slice-of-life, from deadly sorceresses to family drama, spaceships to moko jumbies.

But it’s not just a beautifully-told story. It’s also a pop-culture paradigm shift in the making, and if that kind of thing piques your fascination, then that’s why you should be first in line to read it.

How did you come up with the title of your book?

It quite literally just came to me. I didn’t think about it; didn’t brainstorm or ruminate or daydream. I asked myself ‘What’s the name of this story?” and there it was in my mind: “Nescada.” It always was. I remember the moment quite clearly. The subtitle for Book 1, Kindler of Flames, came later and is derived from events which unfold in that first instalment, and from the idea that every inferno starts with a bit of kindling … with a flame. This book is the beginning of a fire; one that burns dark and bittersweet.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular artwork?

The as-yet-unrevealed cover for Nescada: Kindler of Flames was designed by my husband, Sean “Testament” Abbott under his company name, Deviant Test Creative. It’s not really something I went with so much as it’s something I conceptualized from scratch.

I don’t want to say any more about it, but I am willing to discuss the cover for House of Neotar, my 8-chapter excerpt from Kindler of Flames, now live on Wattpad. Again, this is something I conceptualized from scratch, and Deviant Test painted it for me.
