Butlers, baking and biking - Charity Committee
My first year at Pocklington School has sped by
in a whirl of new names and faces but there are a
few notable events that have stuck in my mind.
Of course meeting the new Headmaster, Mr
Seth, is one but this is something I prepared for.
More unexpected was the experience of
watching students pour cold baked beans over a
member of staff in a bathtub.
The willingness of both staff and students to
donate their time, money and sometimes
dignity in the name of charity is a testament to
the strong school community that exists. The
Lower and Middle School fairs during Charity
Week were a sight to behold with tables of
cakes, sweets, games and pig races, the ethereal
music created by Alexandra Dariescu and Harry
Kneeshaw and friends in their respective
concerts and the raising of staff pulses as they
cycled from Pocklington to London (well sort of),
have all contributed to raise a fantastic total of
over £4000 for our house charities.
It is important to mention that none of this
would be possible without the boundless
enthusiasm of Mrs Alexander and the Sixth Form
charity team. A massive thank you and
congratulations goes to them for their hard work
this year.

Pastoral/Welfare update
The summer term brings with it the expected
anxieties that surround exam season and
general end-of-year tiredness. In school, it
seems as though we constantly work hard
towards that common goal of achieving exam
success, and whilst this is important, when we
are stressed we can find ourselves vulnerable to
realising what is really important in life; in order
to be successful, we need to achieve ‘balance’.
When students struggle with any aspect of their
lives, our best advice to them is to ask them to
try to re-focus and gain a wider ‘perspective’ by
asking them to name what is really important to
3
them? Usually, the things that help us to thrive
are family, friends, relaxation and hobbies; the
holidays are nigh – the perfect chance for us to
re-establish much needed balance and
perspective. Have a fabulous summer!
