Message from our Chaplain

As we approach the season of Christmas , it is inevitable that most of us will use this occasion to self-reflect upon the past year and ponder about the future . One could say the role of a chaplain in a school is to promote the concept of Christian resilience . This past term has been no different , with our assemblies , mindfulness exercises , confirmation and counselling classes , all conveying beliefs and concepts that enable individuals to cope with life when it particularly goes pear-shaped .
Resilience requires an ability to overcome daily hassles , major setbacks and reaching out for greater meaning and purpose . Although this may seem a modern-day concept , the purpose of Pocklington School has always been to produce healthy balanced pupils , who know what they believe and who will play a part in our country ’ s development . A key part of resilience is an ability to reflect . I hope you and your family will find time this Christmas to ponder , reflect and be more prepared for the coming new year .
Canon Dr Bill Merrington , Chaplain
It has been an excellent term in boarding . Whole boarding events have included a trip to Flamingo Land , a special British Seaside supper , a spectacular bonfire night and fireworks evening , and the very festive Christmas dinner . The Junior houses have been out regularly on Sunday afternoons and there have also been evening trips to the football at Hull City and York Ladies , a basketball game , and the York Shine Walk . The Saturday morning enrichment programme has seen an Escape Room come to us and boarders visiting the Birds of Prey Centre and York Minster amongst other places .

CCF

We were delighted to welcome 76 Fourth Year recruits into the Contingent in September , and I have enjoyed watching them rise and adapt to the varied challenges of CCF ever since . From skill at arms to survival and firing the air rifle , they have enjoyed the opportunities , whilst working together and developing their communication skills . Our Senior Army Cadets took part in Ex Black Rat in October and enjoyed the competition element as well as the overnight exercise . Our Senior Army and RAF Cadets represented the Contingent in the Pocklington Town Remembrance Parade in November and showed respect and pride throughout . With plenty more flying on the horizon for the RAF , firing on the electronic indoor range , overnight exercises , field days and ultimately Summer Camp , it is sure to be a busy year ahead for our CCF cadets .
