Pocklington School Newsletter MM22 | Page 2

Headmaster ’ s Welcome

I hope you are looking forward to the festive season and that you have a restful and enjoyable break . This introduction is normally an opportunity for me to signpost and remember some key events over the past term . On this occasion , I intend to highlight just one event and how its impact brought our whole community together in a way that is rarely witnessed . It began with rumours and the appearance of black ties on the BBC . Pupils ’ attention to a rapidly developing news situation grew and grew and we finally received news on the evening of Thursday 8 September of the death of Queen Elizabeth II .
In a twist of fate , we were due to hold our whole Senior School service at All Saints Church in Pocklington the very next day . Much chair moving and frenetic organisation precedes the event , and this occasion was no different . What was different was the absence of the usual buzz of conversation that pervades the church prior to Mr Taylor striking up on the organ . Pupils were near silent , reflective , and deeply respectful . Whether they were considering the astonishing life of our late monarch , thinking about the term ahead or perhaps recalling personal memories , it was a genuinely moving moment .
Much has happened since then , and it is often with some amazement that I look back on the achievements and progress our students and colleagues have made together . I hope this newsletter offers you the chance for reflection and celebration . Have a wonderful holiday .
Toby Seth , Headmaster
Pupils created portraits of the late HM The Queen . Inspired by artist Andy Warhol and using collage and mono printing , they created beautiful pieces of work to represent the Queen at different stages of her life .
