Pocklington School takes centre stage on BBC Breakfast

The media spotlight descended on our school in January when OP Kyle Edmund reached the semi-final of the Australian Open, beating some of the world’ s top players along the way.
BBC Breakfast broadcast from the Sports Hall and the Prep School, interviewing staff and pupils in the build-up to the biggest game of the 23 year-old’ s career so far. Pupils arrived at 6am to be part of the broadcast.
Mark Ronan, Headmaster, said:“ It was an exciting day for us all. Not only did our shared pride in the achievements of an Old Pocklingtonian lift the spirits of the school, but the BBC’ s visit gave pupils a fascinating insight

Students transform unsold food into a feast

A Masterchef-style challenge brought out the inventive culinary skills of Sixth Formers when they transformed out-of-sell-by-date food donated by Tesco’ s into appetising meals.
Eight Lower Sixth Formers competed in pairs to create dishes from ingredients including pork, peppers and sweet potatoes, strawberries and mangoes, plus a few store cupboard essentials.
Their creations, made without prior knowledge of the ingredients, were taste-tested by judges from Tesco and Pocklington School. They declared it a very close-run contest, with Tiger Brash and Peter Massey’ s pork & mango curry into the world of TV news and the challenges of outside broadcasts.”
Pocklington School also featured in coverage by BBC Newsround, Radio 5 Live, BBC Look North, Capital and Heart Radio, Radio 1 Newsbeat, BBC2’ s Victoria Derbyshire, BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Radio York, The Times, Daily Mail and stories in the national and regional press distributed by the Press Association.
Kyle suffered a hip injury and was defeated in the game, but his successful run helped elevate him to British No 1 and a career-high 24th in the world rankings.

Economics and Business Studies teacher Phil Donaldson was the third judge at the Masterchef Challenge, and Cookery Teacher Anne-Marie Salmon liaised with Tesco.
