Pocklington School Newsletter Lent 2024 March 2024 | Page 2

Headmaster ’ s Welcome

In my view , the Lent Term can be the toughest period in any school ’ s calendar . The Michaelmas and Summer Terms have the prize of the Christmas and summer holidays at their end , and whilst the Easter break is of course important and significant , for a number of our pupils , revision and preparation for examinations has a ( necessary !) impact on this stretch of downtime . Add to this the fact that this term has been markedly shorter than normal , then you will understand that it has been busy and challenging , but I am pleased to say , ultimately satisfying !
Indeed , of my 16 terms at Pocklington School , this one is perhaps the most ‘ Pock ’ yet ! Our girls ’ 1st Hockey XI team did us proud in reaching the semi-final of the England Hockey School Championship , our actors were equally impressive in the Shakespeare Schools ’ Festival in Leeds , our CCF cadets have been busy as ever and we ’ ve even had time to squeeze in a trip to Cádiz , Lectern Society , sports fixtures from Scarborough to Shropshire and of course a great deal besides .
Colleagues have furthered their knowledge of AI , expanded their approach to pupil feedback and , as always , gone that extra mile to support all our pupils as they peer over the horizon to the Summer Term and , for some , the end of their time here at Pocklington .
Lastly , my thanks to all involved in a very special service of Commemoration of Benefactors and Founders earlier this term . I am deeply thankful to all for the efforts that went into making the service fittingly moving and uplifting . With best wishes for the Easter break , have a good holiday . Good luck to those revising !

Commemoration of Benefactors

Chaplain

This term has been noted for the visit of two Bishops in one week ! The Bishop of Selby came to lead our confirmation service . Bishop John is retiring this summer , and we are grateful for his faithfulness in visiting the School over the past few years . The Archbishop of York came for our service of Commemoration of Benefactors and Founders and gave us a powerful talk . In fact , both Bishops conveyed the same message . This being ‘ do not waste the hand that God has dealt you in life .’ This is hard to grasp when you are a teenager . However , I ’ m sure as parents , we can appreciate the thought .
