Whole of enterprise delivery success – managing enterprise project capability for high impact Rob Loader Director Project Change Consulting
The increasing global economy and demand for fast paced change requires organisations to organise for continuous strategy evolution and maximum responsiveness to remain competitive and sustain growth. Essential to sustaining success and competitive advantage in these turbulent times are flexibility and speed in execution of strategic initiatives. These pressures dramatically increase the importance of Enterprise Project Management (EPM) competency to integrate strategy with successful execution, instilling change disciplines, and optimising portfolio investment decisions. The role and importance of project management in enabling strategic execution is widely accepted. Organisations are professionalising project personnel and investing in enterprise execution capability. EPM and Portfolio Management are essential to building an enterprise delivery capability to sustain strategic execution and benefits realisation. However it is often implemented without inflexibly, without focus and commitment, undermining its value. Long-run success requires deployment of deliberate EPM infrastructure, tools, and processes to ensure a high impact and sustained capability uplift. This presentation will explain the fundamentals of Enterprise Project Management as a leadership and management philosophy and its role in enabling sustained strategic change competency. The presentation will cover EPM in the organisational strategic context, its value and benefits and the infrastructure components to create EPM as a successful and cohesive strategic execution capability. The paper is based on global literature review, the author’s experience developing organisational project capability and his EPM thesis research. The research found EPM improves strategic execution, however supportive infrastructure and sustained improvement are essential for long-run strategy delivery and benefit realisation success.
