This project management is much more than the ‘traditional’ planning and management of schedules, budgets and procurement. ‘Authentic project management’ recognises the human factors in gaining alignment between the project team and stakeholders; the management of risks and opportunities; managing the change; and the conversion of the idea, need or problem into an asset that provides value. This approach to project management integrates not only the traditional knowledge areas (scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications and procurement) into planning and decision making, but also stakeholder management, sustainability, environment, ethics, opportunity, value management, culture, emotional intelligence, human factors, behavioural biases etc. This decision making is essential for the optimal use of limited resources (time, money, people, materials, equipment and machinery). Authentic project management requires an appropriate blend of people management, leadership, experience, intuition, courage, passion, education and ‘traditional’ project management processes to ensure that the right amount and type of engineering, by the right people, at the right time, and in the right way are utilised to produce value and realise benefits.
