Complex Project Management – Global Perspectives and the Implications for the Australian Economy Stephen Hayes Managing Director and Chief Executive International Centre for Complex Project Management

Complex projects worldwide often exhibit high failure rates due to a lack of understanding of the extent of risk and complexity involved. Only 40% of major projects are delivered on time and on budget leading to significant avoidable loss to the Australian economy. As a national indicator, a lack of productivity in the resources and energy sector contributes to Australia being 40% more expensive than the USA. The presentation shares ICCPM’s finding regarding mega-project failure, the findings of the International Task Force Report CPM- Global Perspectives and the Strategic Agenda to2025. The presentation then identifies key research gaps in managing complex projects and programs and the needs for collaboration among researchers and end-users (such as industry and government). Filling those gaps would provide Australia the opportunity to improve its productivity and regain a competitive advantage in securing and delivering major projects of more than $900bn.
