After years of pressure from SCA
and other groups to improve
water pollution controls on effluent
that the Dickerson GenOn coal-fired
plant releases into the Potomac, the Maryland
Department of Environment at last instituted stronger regulations. Rather
than comply, GenOn is closing the plant—the second largest industrial
polluter in Montgomery County, just after the Dickerson trash incinerator!
We will continue to prod county officials to develop a robust “zero waste”
plan for our trash. Even in these difficult economic times, the County has
budgeted for increased education and enforcement for recycling, and new
programs for composting commercial and residential food waste. These
steps will enhance the day the Dickerson trash incinerator can be shuttered
for good.
While SCA has long focused on protecting the Ag Reserve environment,
our dedication to supporting farming that can provide more local products
to the community while enhancing community climate resilience is an
emergent priority. You can read more about the transformation of Linden
