by wib middleton

Any business that hits the twenty-year mark is a milestone worthy of celebration and lots of high fives . For South Mountain Creamery in Middletown , Maryland that anniversary happened in April without much fanfare . Like so many recent celebratory events , the pandemic nixed them and added to the pain . And yet through the last year of shutdowns and major disruptions there have been a few silver linings . Such is the case for South Mountain Creamery , nestled in the undulating fields of the Middletown Valley . The farm expanse is over 3,300 acres and home to over 500 grass-fed dairy cows , 100 beef cattle , some 16,000 chickens , and Karen ’ s Kountry Store where you can buy delicious products like their homemade ice creams , baked goods and many other farm fresh items .

Much more than its name implies , South Mountain Creamery is really a moveable feast , a mobile farm market . Customers can shop online for weekly deliveries
“ We see ourselves as stewards of the land , preserving our farm for future generations with responsible farming practices and the ethical treatment of animals . The next generation is already lending a helping hand , and by teaching them the right way to do things , as our parents taught us , we carry on the legacy of the land .”
