SOME ENGLISH METHODS OF TELLING

Dealing the Cards by Sevens
After the pack of thirty-two cards has been shuffled
by the enquirer and cut with the left hand, the Diviner
must count off seven cards, including the top card as the
first.
The seventh card should be placed face upwards
to the left of the table to start the necessary row of cards.
Repeat this four times and you will have four odd cards
left over.
Add these to the discarded cards and let the
enquirer well shuffle them and cut as before.
Once again deal them in sevens, taking the seventh
card each time as before.
This gives you eight cards
face upwards on the table.
Have the discarded heap
once more shuffled and cut and deal as before in sevens,
but this time you can only add three cards to the row,
as you only have twenty-four left in hand.
•
When
this has been done, place the final three cards,
downwards, by themselves, and make the row of
cards exposed on the table up to twelve by adding from
the discarded heap either the type card representing the
enquirer, the Jack of his suit, to represent his thoughts,
or the Nine of Hearts, the Wish card, if either of these
