Where does all of this waste come from?

The garbage patch islands, floating pieces of trash, plastic litering the beach- all of these elements are relatively new, and mostly unknown until about a half century ago.

So why are the signs only beginning to appear now? This question can be answered by looking back to the history of plastic. Although invented in the late 1800s, the demand exponentially increased during World War II as a substitute for other materials such as rubber6. Soon, plastics were found everywhere, and were deemed as a necessary material in everyday life.
