Things YOU Can Do To

Although it may seem hard to try and reduce the amount of trash that is damaging our oceans, there are a lot of things human in particular can do in order to save our oceans and the animals that live in them. In the diagram on the right, it describes 10 different ways that humans can help keep trash out of the seas.

1. Can It

The first idea states that everyone should have a lid on their trash can. This prevents trash from falling out of the garbage can and ultimately getting into the oceans.

2. Tap It

This action includes using and drinking tap water from reuseable water bottles instead of buying plastic bottles. This would result in a lot less plastic water bottles getting into and polluting our oceans.

3. Stow It

The third action is about boating. It states that people should learn how to use their boat in a 'green' way in order to reduce the amount of pollution that goes into the ocean.

4. Butt In

The fourth idea is about writing letters to policy makers and government officials. By writing letters, officials can make new policies that help ocean trash.

5. Remove It

The fifth idea is all about removing trash from the ground, the beach, or anywhere. The more trash that is picked up, the less that will end up in the ocean.

6. Butt Out

This idea is about cigarettes. It states that people who smoke should use ashtrays to deposit their cigarettes, instead of throwing them on the ground or in the water.

7. Recycle It

The seventh idea is one of the most important actions to do: Recycle. Instead of throwing everything out, people should buy reusable items or reuse materials more than once. This action will greatly reduce the amount of trash in the oceans.

8. Reuse It

This action goes along with recycling. Instead of using things only once, we should use them multiple times. For example, people should replace plastic water bottles that are only used once with reusable water bottles. The less trash that we produce, the less that will end up in the sea.

9. Refuse It

The ninth action involves refusing to buy products that we don't need. Not only will that save money, but it will also reduce the trash that is produced.

10. Reinvent It

The final actions that humans can do is to email or write letters to different companies to get them to reduce the amount of packaging that they have on their products.
