A blossoming tree provides brown pollen to bees and leaf honey produced by aphids . Birch acorns are a favorite food of birds , and other small animals also find them when they fall to the ground . The leaves are food for livestock , and there and here , they are also a medicine for humans . Their decoction treats rheumatism and urinary tract diseases . They are a component of diuretics , disinfectant and degreasing teas . Birch oil and birch bark have long been used as a medicine for disinfection of wounds and against rheumatism .
