The Revenant tells the real history of Hugh Glass, a hunter of 19th century, who, after have been attacked by a wild bear and left behind by his group, have to fight with the adverse conditions to survive.
That incredible history is brightly directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman) who uses stunning filming techniques to turn a movie which could be ordinary in a remarkable experience. Scenes like the opening or the bear attack were shot in tough long takes that contributed to immerse the spectator in that brute reality.
The photography is also essential to the grandiosity of the movie. The ruthless cold and the huge landscapes are shown with melancholy and, at same time, poetry.
However, none of this would work if the main actor was incompetent, but what we see is an outstanding Leonardo DiCaprio performance with full intensity, energy and dedication. It’s totally understandable his favoritism to the Oscar in this year.
It’s necessary to say that the movie would be better if were a little bit shorter, because, in some moments, especially in the second act, it becomes overly slow and monotonous, however, the final balance is considerably positive. It’s a marvelous movie which will stick in your mind as intense as the bear attack.
