Labeling: The Pros and Cons
Pros:
- consumers will be more informed about their purchases
- U.S can resume trade with other countries that require labeling
- decrease the amount of genetically modified foods produced
- more consumer choice
- less monopolistic control over food production by the biotech industry
Cons:
- labels have a negative connotation for consumers
- biotech industry will most likely lose money
- labels will come at a small cost to consumers
Clearly, the pros outweight the cons in the debate on labeling. The only problem is convincing state and federal politicians that a change is necessary
6. Write a letter to a politician. Write your local politician and tell him why you think GMF's should be labeled. Feel free to use any information from the magazine to help.
7. Prepare your own food. Next time you think about buying a frozen meal think again. They often contain large amounts of genetic modifiication to preserve their contents. Instead buy food as fresh as you can cook as much of your meal as you can on your own.
8. Join an organization. Get involved with one of the many world wide organizations against genetically modifiied foods such as greenpeacce or the Non-GMO Project.
9. Do more research. There is much more information that presented in this magazine. Keep looking for new information and new ways to get involved.
10. Spread the word. Genetically modified foods are still a new concept to people Spread the word on what you know about GMF's and help others make the decision to fight against the big biotech companies. We are all in this together for a healthier planet.
