Listenting and questioning

According to the book, The Art of Coaching by Elena Aguilar, it includes the importance of listening to the teacher and how to question the teacher in order to guide them through self-reflecion. This is referred to as THE MOVEMENTS IN THE COACHING DANCE.

WHAT DOES LISTENING LOOK LIKE, FEEL LIKE, AND SOUND LIKE?

Although it can feel awkward at first to paraphrase, it is actually an effective way to build trust with the teacher and demonstrate your intention to listen deeply. First, use quiet listening to HEAR the teacher. Next, use paraphrasing probes to ensure you understand correctly.

  • In other words...

  • What I am hearing then...

  • It sounds like you are saying... Is that correct? Did I miss something?

  • I'm hearning many things...

  • As I listen to you, I am hearing...

  • HOW TO ASK PROBING QUESTIONS?

The purpose of asking probing questions is to help the teacher uncover thinking or beliefs that they might not have uncovered immediately.

  • Would you tell me a little more about...?

  • Let me see if I understand...

  • I'd be interested in hearing more about...

  • It would help me understand if you'd give me an example of...

  • So, are you saying (or suggesting) that...?

  • Tell me more about what you mean when you...

  • Tell me how that idea is like (or different from)..

  • To what extent were you...

  • I'm intrigued by... I'm interested in... I wonder...

  • When did this happen? Where were you? How long did it take? Who was there?
