Assessment
Assessment is an ongoing process that helps us understand each child ' s strengths, interests, growth, and learning needs. Information gathered through assessment helps teachers plan meaningful learning experiences, individualize instruction, and support children ' s development across all domains.
Assessment is embedded in everyday classroom experiences and occurs through observation, conversations, work samples, documentation, and interactions with children throughout the day.
Developmental Screening
As part of getting to know each child, developmental and social-emotional screenings are completed within 45 days of enrollment.
Screening tools may include:
• Ages and Stages Questionnaires ®( ASQ)
• Ages and Stages Social-Emotional Questionnaires ®( ASQ: SE)
• Vision and hearing screenings, as applicable
Connecticut families with children ages birth to five may also access developmental screening resources through Sparkler.
Screenings help identify strengths, support individual growth, and determine whether additional support or resources may be beneficial.
Ongoing Assessment
Teachers use authentic assessment practices to document children ' s growth over time. Assessment information is used to:
• Understand children ' s strengths and interests
• Monitor progress toward learning goals
• Individualize instruction and support
• Inform classroom planning
• Partner with families around children ' s development
Program staff regularly review assessment information to guide decision-making and ensure that all children receive meaningful learning opportunities and appropriate supports.
