as a SIDE NOTE When Chuck first came to TLS, I quickly did the math and realized that he could easily be my son, and for 364 days each year, I managed to avoid “mothering” my boss. On May 1st of each year, however, I did allow myself to think of him in a different way. Chuck lost his mother when he was a boy, so I took a few minutes to fill in for her with a birthday wish expressing what I know she would have been feeling ... her pride in his successes, her joy in the family he and Erin have created, and her love for the man he has become.... We would laugh about these birthday messages, but what Chuck doesn’t know is that I would always shed a few tears while writing them. I’m going to miss him so much.
