For the first time in 32 years
there will be a new boss on the
Sand Rock sidelines. Hall of Famer
Rusty Jacoway retired in the
winter and turned the program
over to assistant Steven Chestnut.
Chestnut is certainly no stranger
to the Rock program. He grew
up in the community, played for
Coach Jacoway, and has coached
his entire tenure at Sand Rock.
Under Chestnut the tradition of
great participation is continuing.
The Wildcats will welcome more
than 60 players, including 20
seniors, to fall drills.
Sand Rock returns five starters
on both offense and defense
from last year’s 5-5 team. Key
returnees include three-year
starting fullback Alex McMahan,
who will be a key team leader
for the 2015 team. Chestnut
describes junior RB/OLB Braden
Carver as a big hitter on defense
and will move to linebacker from
safety. The Wildcats will feature a
good sized offensive line anchored
by seniors Austin Andrews and
Rob Jennings. The large numbers
mean lots of depth, especially
at running back and linebacker.
The defense looked strong at the
Spring Gridiron Classic at JSU
and should be the strength of
the team. That side of the ball is
led by senior Tristan Daugherty,
a big stopper at defensive end.
Players to watch on offense
include receivers Joel Brock and
Zach Ellison. Brock will also start
at corner and had a big game in
the spring versus Glencoe. The
quarterback will be a senior,
but a first year starter in Caleb
Kasinger. Class 3A, Region 7
will be balanced once again, but
