By the end of winter Mom’ s doctor said it was time to get her a prosthetic. She was fitted with one and on April 1 st she took her first steps with her new leg. We were all there at the hospital to witness it. There were tears, laughing, and shouts of happiness, not just from our family but most of Mom’ s nurses and doctors as well.

During one of her check-ups he

told her that when she was brought in to the emergency room he hadn’ t expected her to live through the night.

There would be a lot more physical therapy to come in the next weeks but this was a huge milestone for her— and the rest of us too.
Back at the dorm that night everything that had happened over the last eight months hit me all at once. I had cried many tears since the night we almost lost Mom, out of sadness and frustration. But on that night I was simply humbled and grateful. These three girls that I barely knew at the beginning of the school year had become like sisters to me. Even more than that, they had helped my family and gone so far over and above what friends do. How could I ever thank them for that?
Mom’ s recovery was completely successful. Her doctor told her that was a miracle in itself. During one of her check-ups he told her that when she was brought in to the emergency room he hadn’ t expected her to live through the night. The infection was spreading so fast he didn’ t think they could save her. He also predicted her recovery would be minimal and she might never walk again.
