Thoughts about being a Junior High Teacher …

I have always wanted to be a teacher. My father said I would make a great teacher because I was the bossy one and always wanted to be in charge.
I planned to be a high school teacher, but my student teaching advisor placed me at a junior high. I tried to talk him into changing my placement, but he told me that he really felt junior high was where I needed to be. He was absolutely right. I fell in love with the teens and tweens and have been in junior high ever since.
I have been teaching for 26 years, all for the same school district. I have taught 6 th grade math, 7 th grade prealgebra, and 8 th grade math. I currently teach 7 th grade math and 7 th grade algebra. In our district, students enter the junior high from three feeder intermediate schools, each holding grades 4 through 6. The junior high holds approximately 600 seventh and eighth graders.
I love 7 th graders! They are new to the building and most still have an innocence about them. They still want to please their teachers. I try to treat them as young adults and in some cases, it’ s the first time they become responsible for their actions. Hormones are awakening and bodies are changing! New friendships are made and most are trying to figure out where they fit in.
