I went with Mom to her doctor ' s appointment today. We asked all the right questions, but didn ' t get the answers we wanted to hear. The latest tests weren ' t good. " The chemo didn ' t work like we ' d hoped," the doctor said. " There are a few other options we can try, but there are a lot of side effects and we ' re not really sure they ' ll be effective."

I wanted to show the same kindness. That ' s the way she raised me after all, but I was so angry. I wanted to scream at them. " What do you mean by thank you, Mom? Didn ' t you hear a word he said? He wants to give you more medicine that may or may not work AND will make you so sick that you can ' t get out of bed. And there is Dr. James just smiling, and looking like it ' s just another Tuesday."
