I Am Her Daughter

April 12, 2010

We took Mom and Dad to Willie ' s Little League baseball game today. When we picked them up Mom had to run back into the house to get her baseball cap, the red one that ' s identical to Willie ' s. Her hair hasn ' t grown back yet from the last round of chemotherapy. " Do you think they ' ll let me play today?" she asked with a wink.
No one cheered louder than Mom did when Willie made it to first base without getting out. The way she stood and yelled, you ' d have thought he ' d just won the World Series. I want to remember how she looked in just that moment. Happy. Laughing. Her cheeks flushed from the heat of the sun and excitement. She looked healthy just like she used to.
After the game at the restaurant Mom sat with Christy and teased her about the new boy she has a crush on. " Does he get good grades? What does he look like? What color are his eyes? Does he play sports? When can Grandpa and I meet him?" Christy rolled her eyes at the rapid fire questions. " Grammmmaaaa!" she said.
I laughed right along with them, but I know what Mom is doing. She ' s making memories for them. This is how she wants them to remember her. I want to remember her this way too but my heart is so sad when I think of her not being here to share these days with me. It ' s hard to concentrate on anything else.
