TIPS FOR INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS

As an intermediate pickleball player , you ’ ve mastered the basics and are now delving deeper into the strategic aspects of the game . However , as your skills advance , so does the intensity of play , bringing new safety challenges . Players often don ’ t realize the impact they are making on their bodies and how to get to that next level . It ’ s easy to plateau and not know what ’ s stopping you from raising your game just another notch . This article focuses on safety tips tailored for intermediate players to keep the game enjoyable and injury-free and help you keep growing . Make it one of your resolutions to practice safety rituals and you ’ ll be able to stay on the court more in 2024 !
1 . Advanced Footwear and Gear
At this level , consider upgrading your equipment . Shoes with better lateral support are crucial for the quick side-to-side movements in pickleball . Also , opt for performance-based athletic wear that offers comfort and flexibility . Good shoes can often be bulky and uncomfortable for players not accustomed to a racquet sport . A good pair of shoes is comfortable as well as durable . They should help you move , not hinder or hurt you .
2 . Refined Warm-Up Routines
Introduce dynamic stretches and sport-specific drills into your warm-up routine . This prepares your body for the more demanding play and helps prevent muscle strains and joint injuries . A proper warm-up means better play . Find a routine that works for you and your needs . Do you need more hip mobility ? Is your footwork needing attention ?
3 . Enhanced Court Awareness
Intermediate play often involves faster volleys and strategic positioning . Stay constantly aware of your surroundings — including other players ’ locations — to avoid collisions , especially during fast-paced rallies .
Players often concentrate on the wrong things , taking focus away from the things that do matter . Communication can help with partner awareness . You don ’ t both need to go for the same ball . Be aware of where your partner is as well as where you want to hit the ball .
4 . Strategic Play vs . Aggressive Play
Learn to balance aggressive play with strategic play .
Overly aggressive play can lead to unnecessary risks . Focus on smart positioning and shot selection to play effectively yet safely . Athleticism can take you a long way , but knowing how to play with high IQ can take you much farther . A long day of matches can take a lot out of your body and often you won ’ t have enough left for your next round . This is a time of high risk of injury ! Getting to know more strategically what is most effective will save you time and decrease the risk of injury .
