The resort hired a local company, Sports Courts,
to do the work, and the courts have been full since
2016. The resort also hired a local pro to oversee
programming and the popularity of the courts grew
from there.
“Locals started playing, and I began to play pickleball
with the guests,” Mirza says. “Before I knew it, we
were holding tournaments. The demand was so high, I
went back to the owners and asked to convert another
tennis court to four more pickleball courts, which
should be complete before we hold our pickleball
training camp in June. We have temporary nets for the
other tennis courts and, as the need keeps growing,
we’re prepared to convert more of them—up to 12
permanent pickleball courts.”
The Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa courts
are open to non-hotel guests and non-members
for a daily play fee. The courts are open to guests at
the hotel as part of their stay and all equipment is
provided.
While Mirza is the one who got the ball rolling,
he says the resort’s pro really ran with the concept.
“He’s been very instrumental. He has the professional
expertise, and I have the business and hospitality
background,” he adds. “Together we not only have
an area for daily fun and enjoyment, but a place
where business and leisure meet. We use the courts
frequently for conferences and meetings because
round robin tournaments are a popular team-building
activity. Pickleball can open a world of opportunities
depending on how you want to look at it.”
