While most spectators can relate
to doubles, because that’s what they
typically enjoy, the Singles Open
Competitions on Sunday blew the
crowd away. Scott Moore took a record
6th men’s gold in one Nationals year,
defeating Glen Peterson in the Senior
Open Men’s Singles final. At the same
time, in the Senior Open Women’s
Singles final, Bonnie Williams defeated
Jennifer Lucore for gold. The afternoon
competition heated up as Irina
Tereschenko took her first Nationals
Singles Gold with a tight victory over
Lucia Kovalova.
The final match of the day was a rare
treat for spectators as they watched what
could be easily deemed the best pickleball
singles match ever played. Marcin
Rozpediski took the gold over Tyson
McGuffin in a match that battled back
and forth for a grueling 70 minutes.
With the Nationals VIII wrapped up,
there isn’t any question that this year
presented some of the highest-level
pickleball ever played, with the influx
of tennis talent and younger players
changing the sport forever. Seeing such
talent on display leaves us anxiously
awaiting the 2017 Nationals to see what
new surprises await. •
