Raising Chickens for Eggs
If you are like most people, you want chickens for their
delicious and nutritious eggs. There are many breeds that
will meet your needs. They include everything from
bantams (small chickens that lay small eggs) to Jersey
Giants (the largest chicken breed). There are chickens
that lay brown eggs, white eggs, and even blue and green
eggs. Some chickens will give you nearly an egg a day
while others will only give you an egg a week. Do you
see why it is important to make sure you choose the right
breed? Imagine owning six heavy layers that churn out a
dozen eggs every couple of days when you only need a
few table eggs here and there. The good thing about
making this purchase error is that friends, family and
neighbors will be happy to take the extra eggs off of
your hands. However, if you have a family of five and
you purchase a flock of bantams to support your heavy
egg usage, you will be very disappointed to discover that
they do not lay on a daily basis and that their eggs are
smaller than those of standard size chickens.
